About the Author

Joseph Bruchac's poems, articles and stories have appeared in over 500 publications, and he has authored more than 70 books for adults and children. His honors include a Rockefeller Humanities fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Writing Fellowship for Poetry, the Cherokee Nation Prose Award, the Knickerbocker Award, and the Hope S. Dean Award for Notable Achievement in Children's Literature. In 1999, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas. His current project is the graphic novel Dawn Land.

This is a fine little collection of simply-rendered scares. While considered YA, the steeled adult will find them a delightful bedtime read, while the more sensitive grown-up might still get a chill. In addition, it’s a well-organized overview of Northeastern Native American legends—a great primer for the less informed, as I was. A few of the most frightening were “Ugly Face,” “The Spreaders,” and “Big Tree People.” Some of these tales’ last lines stab where it counts and leave a lasting impression.Great fun on a cold January night, WHEN THE CHENOO HOWLS is a refreshing reminder that less is more.

Informative coupled with very readable composition and use of words. Good Book

This is a great little collection of modernized and easy to read traditional Algonquin (NE Native) tales. These stories focus on a little known genre of Native American tales the monster tales which are not particularly scary. Really love this book.

Fun, informative book. The illustrations are exceptional.

As a school librarian, I have read several books by this author, and when I saw that he had this collection, I was anxious to read this book as well. I was thoroughly entertained, I recommend this book of short, scary legends, and I intend to share some of these stories with my students in class......Enjoy!
