I hope I'll be forgiven for overstating the case for this book. First, I was enchanted by the careful beauty of her illustrations, which are detailed without ever breaking the spell of the "being there" in her world. Second, it brought me and wife to tears when we read it for the first time, and after searching for a reason we said that the book was incredibly human. In a world where so much seems to be inhuman and political, this book talks about simple things, real things, beautiful things. Third, this is a book that will not just make a child learn about lighthouses, or like lighthouses. It is a book that will make a child fall in love with lighthouses, and I think children are desperately in need of less "learning" and more falling in love. This book is probably not flashy enough to win many awards, but that is exactly why I am so grateful for it being written and so glad to think of my children reading it for years to come. It is a true children's book and a rare gift.

I give the story itself 5 stars. For our family, it's poetic and beautiful. I like to read stories that create a vision in my children's head rather than stories that spell out every little detail of what is being told in the story. I like picture books that promote beautiful images and inspire young minds to use their imaginations and depict on their own what is happening or about to happen as I read the story to them. This book does that. Although my toddler didn't understand the story, just loved looking at the pictures, my six year old LOVED the story and understood it well. We talked about the sad parts and the beauty of life. He loves this story so much that I decided to buy it for his birthday (we had checked it out at the library previously).This is where my 3 stars comes in. The book jacket cover came with what looks like red crayon on the back of it. I ordered a replacement and that one came with scuff marks on the back and is a little torn on the front. Very minor blemishes, but frustrating nonetheless. I wish the book jacket was more durable for little hands but more importantly more durable to at least arrive in pristine condition. I'm not even sure it's worth trying to re-order another replacement at this point.

This is an incredibly beautiful book, a marvelous introduction to the lighthouses on this nation's coasts. The narrative gives an impression of the isolation of living in a lighthouse and the responsibilities of the lighthouse keeper through pages of exquisite illustrations, and there are two pages of general information about lighthouses at the end. This is a book to treasure by any child from "mature toddler" to mid-elementary schooler. I'm at the far end of the age continuum, and I love it, too.

Giving books to children is one of life's pleasures. The illustrations in this book are superlative. Sweet and calming. There's no preaching, just the story of the lighthouse keeper and his family told in few words. I'm giving three of them to children ages 3-7 for birthdays.

I love this book! It was a gift for my grandson. I wanted to introduce him to the tradition of lighthouses that guard our coastlines and guide the safe passage for ships on the sea.

A poignant family story. Exquisite artwork. Yes, that was me with a tear in the corner of my eye. The emotional aspects of the story were lost on the little ones -- which is fine by me. For them, it was an engaging story about a family living in and then leaving a lighthouse. A classic.

Following the "Little Schemer" series, this book introduces under the form of a dialogue, and using a toy language, the mysteries of dependently typed languages. Both extremely pleasant to read and challenging.

Let me be clear; this is not a book for everyone. It did happen, though, to be *exactly* the right book for me. It's written, like the other books in the "Little X-er" series, in the form of a dialogue between a teacher and an (extremely good) student. This means that every point in the book invites you to figure out what the answer should be for yourself; this kind of mental struggle is incredibly valuable in learning material and making it your own.The topic is Type Theory; specifically, the kind of intuitionistic type theory that underlies languages like Agda, Idris, and Coq. This book provides a lovely gem of a language (pie) in which to explore these ideas. If you're interested in proof-oriented languages like these and you have substantial familiarity with functional languages, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

A nice and simple introduction to a complex topic. Could be a bit tedious for someone just wanting to come up to speed with DTs. Overall five stars without a doubt.

The way this book teaches a complex topic like dependent types is just fantastic. If you take the time to read through each frame and think about the next frame before you read it, you'll learn so much and so well. Take the time to read and understand every frame. Highly, highly recommended.

Very explicit

This book is an excellent introduction to dependent type theory.Rather than work with one of the major full-featured languagessuch as Coq, Agda, or Idris, the authors chose to design a littleteaching language called Pie. This was the right choice, becauseit helps the reader get clear on the fundamentals of dependenttype theory without being confused by the role of all of the(helpful) bells and whistles that the major languages have. Thebook focuses on the eliminators, or ways of using, each of thedependent types. The little Pie language foregoes user-definedinductive data types, a universe hierarchy, and pattern matching,and instead focuses on a core set of built-in dependent types (Pitypes, Sigma types, and some other basics) along with eliminatorsinstead of pattern matching. I learned recursion from The LittleSchemer a decade ago, but I like this book even better. Thedepth of understanding of the authors is profound, the attentionto detail is amazing, and the insight into what learners need isunbelievable. This is one of my favorite 50 books of all time.

This is a rudimentary book at best and practically useless.The chord forms are the most basic, so this is only marginally useful to abject jazz tyros.Like all such "chord-dictionaries" it is arranged by root names, with no adequate explanation of how keys or key-signatures work much less any info on how to substitute these chords for regular triads. Almost no mention is made of Diatonic harmony or how these chords function.The material is presented linearly, not musically. By that I mean, they put the chords on each page for one root letter ( D. C Bb etc.) then by type ( Major, minor, dominant, altered, etc.) That only serves to bewilder students without some previous theory knowledge.This type of rote memorization has been proven to obfuscate rather than elucidate. It seems as though Berklee is intentionally trying to confuse people enough to make them want to pay tuition just to finally figure out how this stuff works! Berklee has degraded itself into a purely profiteering institution, not the revered music school it once tried to be. They sell "the dream" to confused kids while making simple music theory overly complex.The best way to learn music on any instrument is to find a competent teacher and take lessons. For jazz guitar, that is especially so. Even if you can't afford lessons, you can find better resources for FREE on YouTube, even though youtube is chock-full of ignorance... That is STILL better than this book or any other chord-dictionary like it.This book sucks on every level. Even at $7 bucks, it is WAY over priced.

This book is small and thin. While to does provide chords it does not names the notes in the chord or the intervals. How much more would it have cost to include that information?

Decent chord info if that's what you're looking for. 3 stars for the that. But, the kindle version is a joke!! You can't zoom in to read the chord boxes. Gotta look at the tabs to know which fret were working on. And I'm sitting 8 feet away from a 65 inch monitor.

Fantastic and useful little reference guide. If you're playing jazz or Blues, it's almost and indispensable reference to have if you forget some of the bar forms, you will be glad to have this.

This is a useful guide that can be used for quick reference or to help learn chord structure. All the chord shape are shown in C, which is helpful in avoiding, or emphasizing flats and sharps, as necessary.

This chord dictionary shows many alternate fingerings of some commonly used chords that enable the player to develop many different approaches to standard material. Just one or two new ideas can send your playing down many creative rabbit holes. I keep the book on the coffee table and refer to it often in practise. I would say that this book is just OK. When I am playing a song and really need to know a chord I usually just look it up on a poplar chord and scale finder site online. It has some great jazz chords in it that I use to learn but not really to "look up" what I need. I still use this book often though because I do like the diagrams and I use it as sort of a checklist for chords to remember, so in that sense it is worth getting. There isn't much intro or any reading in it, it is pretty straight forward. It is a good learning tool more than it is a chord bible. It is small and will fit in the pocket of your guitar's gig bag.

Information is generalized and much more emphasis is given to procedure and rote understanding than a deeper grasp of the processes.I could have made it through my class without opening this book once, I can confidently say. There's not enough in there to really grab your attention or inspire you to read more about a particular topic. If you're a novice student or someone who hasn't been in school in a while, the book may come in handy but I'd recommend you challenge yourself with something more substantiative like Rodak's Hematology.

This book is well written: it flows and is an easy read. The reason for only 3 stars is no fault of the writer but of the software and print quality. I started using QuickBooks Online some months ago and was enormously frustrated by it so advance ordered this book. I thought it was my learning curve but the books shows that QBO cannot do what I thought would be its basic strengths as on online system. In fact, it cannot do anything but very basic accounting and payroll. So, about a third of this slim version is devoted to the average QBO user. At least a third to CPAs who use this for their clients. The last third is about the Chrome browser. So, with two thirds of the book useless to me, I am returning the book and looking for new accounting software. One other problem is that the publishers scrimped on ink so the diagrams and screen shots are difficult to see any detail; kind of grey and blurry.

Pluses: Thorough explanation of QuickBooks Online. User oriented presentation. Advice and guidance as promised. Minuses: Not really aimed at dummies, or maybe I'm dumber than most. Very basic setup (e.g. what income categories to use; how to categorize expenditures) isn't presented. The screenshots are helpful, even necessary but they're printed so lightly that they're hard to read.

The book was just ok, I was looking to find out more of things I did not already know. This is not the book for you if that is what you need. I suggest something more detailed. This is just a basic starting guide, no bad review just a suggestion.

This book is not for someone who has a restaurant!!!! It doesn't help when trying to start from scratch. It jumps around to different topics using different versions, using example of stuff that unless you already have it set up doesn't apply. And it doesn't give any information on how to reconcile your accouts. It would have been more helpful, if it would have explained how to set-up that partiuclar section, rather than just random examples.

The pages were difficult to read as the printing was poor. It only addressed very simple transactions and did not have any type of trouble shooting section. I was disappointed.

Waste of money. Poorly organized. Wordy but doesn't tell you anything

This book was good but didn't provide all the information I was looking for while starting out new to Quickbooks Online.

This is a very old publication. Don't get it.. Nothing matches... what's on the book vs. what you see on the screen.

Now it is up to everyone to get the book and find out how things really turned out and see if they learned some thing from it. Now it is time to send a message to the author tell her how much you liked and what the story taught you, then please make a review to let others know what lesson can be learned. I liked the story, because it's about finding your way back to God after losing a love one and not understanding why God took them away. I have been there.Sandra writing shows you so much faith in God and prayer and love she has for God. I appear to be in the minority of people who really enjoyed volume one of Earth One: Wonder Woman and this is coming from someone who has been critical of a lot of things produced by Grant Morrison. Volume one had an aggregate score of 8.0 on Comic Book Round Up from professional reviewers. Early reviews are already putting volume two even lower and the Amazon reviews for volume one were a very soft 3.5 stars while I gave the first volume 5 stars. I think the people who didn’t like volume one are going to like volume two even less but personally I still enjoy the short series.One thing people need to remember is that this story is not in DC canon. If you don’t like this take on Wonder Woman that’s ok because this is an alternate universe. The story opens similar to the 2017 movie where Themyscira is being invaded by the Nazi’s except in the story they are led by a super powerful aryan female called Uberfraulein. The Nazi’s are defeated, and the Venus Girdle is placed on the German female causing her Nazi ideals to slip away while literally dropping her into a submissive position. She is then sent to Improvement Island to engage in a lesbian relationship. This pretty much sets the tone for the story and I imagine this one being at least as polarizing as the first volume.I really wish more comic book writers would do what Grant Morrison is doing with this Earth One series. Morrison deconstructs the very concept of the Amazons but more than that he injects actual relevant and controversial topics into the story. A story about Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor duking it out is fun but it has no social relevance. Wonder Woman being asked whether trans women have a place in her utopia or a pink haired feminist telling Wonder Woman that the Amazons could bring the patriarchy to its knees is socially relevant. Putting aside ones views on the transgendered or modern feminism, Morrison is addressing ideas of the real world. I can understand people not liking this story. The ideas can be uncomfortable, and many people read comics for escapism. I get that. However, if you want pure escapism the comic market is loaded with that and no one is forced to read this book. Also, I think it would be a mistake to think that Morrison is actually advocating some radical view of feminism even if it’s coming out of the mouth of Wonder Woman. Morrison has a character expose some of the flaws in WW’s plan for cheerful male submission.I don’t want to overstate some of the more controversial points of the book. The main story concerns longtime adversary Dr. Psycho and his attempt to manipulate Wonder Woman. There is also an appearance by Max Lord although he really doesn’t do much. The plot was intriguing, and Dr. Psycho felt like a credible threat even though he possesses no super powers. I was really getting into it but the ending felt very abrupt as if it dawned on Morrison that he needed to wrap things up ASAP. Having said that, there isn’t a true ending and it’s clear that the story is intended to continue. Given the infrequency of the Earth One releases there’s never a guarantee that there will be another.I expect more from the Earth One books because they are released so infrequently. Only two came out this year and there are none currently scheduled in the future. Having read the first volume of Wonder Woman Rebirth I would say that Earth One Wonder Woman is a higher level of quality. The art by Yanick Paquette is gorgeous even if you don’t like the story. I found this story more compelling than the first volume of WW Rebirth and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up a third volume if Morrison writes it.

I like the Earth One series because of their excellent writing and stories, this issue let me down, not because of the mention of a GESTAPO division (SS be more correct) but the loving path of the Amazons in volume one has changed to a more radical path, more in the line of the New Batgirl. I'm just looking for fiction escapism. This would be the last Earth-One Wonder woman graphic novel that I would buy.

Grant Morrison doesn't know what is NLP. It is scientific. I have the rights to speak, because I studied it. I gave it only two stars, because I don't like Grant Morrison's work. He doesn't know how to write good scripts. Yannick Paquette's art is excellent, though. I'm not expecting vol. 3.

I've been a Grant Morrison fan for many years. This is one of his greatest works. An absolutely brilliant retelling of Wonder Woman, this sequel is even better than the original. No spoilers, just if one is a Wonder Woman or Morrison fan, read this. Read it now! Just great. Now where's part three?

Grant Morrison is a master of his craft, and this gutsy, gorgeous, and inspired reinvention of the Wonder Woman mythos is something to behold. The artwork by Yanick Paquette is, as always, absolutely stunning, and matched with Morrison's unrivaled storytelling, Vol. 2 is a must-read for everyone interested in the character. Impossibly good, and highly recommended.

Wonder woman continues to pull you into her life.

Is there such a thing as too much information in a guide? Peter does an excellent job in covering every single detail when venturing to the Philippines. Great job Peter!:)

I found little detail in this guide that was helpful. I was hoping to get good insider information specific to Manila, but did not find it here. For example, the restaurant recommendations included TGIF and Outback Steakhouse. Not the local experience I was looking for. When I did try one of the local recommendations it was not at the location cited. Restaurants can certainly come and go, but it added to my frustration and conclusion that the guide was disappointing.Overall the guide was more of a list of options than recommendations or insights.

Very poorly written, and really boring. But there are a lot of shopping malls to look forward to slugging through!

Bought this to carry it in my Kindle as I traveled the Philippines. It was almost useless. Basic info about the city and country, and page upon page upon page about the hotels. I bet I looked at it only twice, with the second look only confirming the first.

This book is the newest edition of the "Little People, Big Dreams" series. It is a mini-biography which introduces the reader to a wonderful woman, Ada Lovelace, who is way ahead of her time. She was born in England having Lord Byron, a very famous poet, as her father in 1819. Her mother, who loves maths, steers her ambitions towards the maths and away from the arts. Strangely enough little Ada inherits both of her parent's ingenious traits. Because of the absence of both parents in her life she spends a lot of time at her grandparent's house. Often on her own she lets her imagination soar. It is saturated with all kinds of creative mental imagery that she happily conjures up.Ada, at the age of fourteen, becomes quite ill and is bed-ridden for three long years. Although her body is frail and sickly her mind flourishes as she studies, invents and dreams.After a while Ada travels to London where she encounters a very famous mathematician named Charles Babbage. Together they mesh their intellect and create something totally magically for the times... the calculator. Ada uses her creative mind and pushes the envelope farther to embellish what it can do. The original calculator is only capable of doing sums quickly and Ada knows that she can make it do even more amazing things. She actually writes a code made up of numbers, that will tell the calculator what to do. It is the first computer language known and some of it is still in use to this very today."She showed that when you use science and imagination, your dreams can take flight."The illustrations enhance and enrich the narrative and the educational facts that the author includes at the end of the book are truly fascinating to read.This series is a wonderful role model for young girls as they read about empowered, normal women who make huge contributions and change the world in a positive way. The stories are simply told and the series is a best-seller. The books truly are a celebration of women hood and are now available in board book format for young readers to enjoy.You never know who you are raising in your home or who you are teaching in your classroom. You just might be nurturing someone who will impact the world in a very dynamic way! I highly, highly recommend this book and the entire series.

The illustrations are beautiful and have a bit of whimsy to them sometimes that matches really well with Ada Lovelace’s wonderful imagination and out of the box thinking. I think the page that illustrates her big break-through with regards to coding is very well done and is a great way to visualize a really complicated matter so that it is understandable for young children. A lot of the colors used are rather dark or muted, though, giving the book a bit of a foreboding, somber atmosphere.Purely on a content level, I’d have liked to have seen a bit more about Ada as a person, something about losing her father (“who liked poetry”…), becoming a mother, her attempts to study in a day and age when women weren’t allowed yet and viewed as less than men. She died really young and in a lot of pain, so I can understand that being glossed over or left out, but a little extra information about her life would have been nice. The focus is on her accomplishment, which is absolutely amazing! But we lose her a bit as a person.I think Ada Lovelace very much deserves her place in this line-up of wonderful children’s books and I hope more girls, and boys, will be inspired by her story.

The illustrations are rendered like children's drawings, but their sly, sophisticated execution underscores the narrative that — no matter how young you are or how male-dominated your field may be — imagination and talent will ultimately shine through.
