Craig S. Keener (PhD, Duke University) is F. M. and Ada Thompson Professor of Biblical Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. I am so glad that I added this NRSV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible to my collection! I prefer this translation to the NIV. Its most attractive layout and colorful pictures and maps make it a total pleasure to read. It is so important to understand the context in which different parts of the Bible were written, to understand the similarities and differences among people's beliefs and customs, to have examples of different kinds of literature. This Bible offers such things. For example, The Song of Solomon includes an article about Egyptian love poetry and Mesopotamian love poetry so the reader can make comparisons.The comfort print in this Bible is pretty kind to older eyes; I would describe the size as between regular/standard print and large print; the notes, of course, are smaller, but the dark print helps to make both the text and notes quite readable. Some might want larger print, but that would make an already very thick book truly massive. Happily, the paper is not as thin as that of some other Bibles I have, and ghosting is minimal. For those who are wondering, it is not a red letter version.As well as the informative articles, introductions, chronologies, maps, and helpful indexes, I especially like the "Hebrew to English Translation Chart" and the "Key New Testament Terms" at the end of the interesting "Time Between the Testaments." I know I will spend many, many hours enjoying this Bible and learning from it.

I like the background information given with each book and sources outside of scriptures that refer to events found in the Bible. It is easy to move from reference notes back to verses. So much more information in Study Bible than any other I am familiar with. I have the Kindle edition.
