Review
"If you are looking for a practical, wise, science-based, and accessible guide to creating the kind of attachment your child needs to optimize development, you’ve come to the right place!…What a gift Raising a Secure Child is for us, for our children, and for the world….A masterpiece."--from the Foreword by Daniel J. Siegel, MD, coauthor of The Whole-Brain Child "I love this book, and know it will be good to reread during the difficult moments of parenting! The best part of Raising a Secure Child is that you don't have to do anything 'extra' to help your child flourish. Instead, the book reminded me of the essential factor hidden in plain sight--my relationship with my child. It made me feel hopeful and confident about my natural ability as a parent."--Kari G., Spokane, Washington "From the creators of the Circle of Security, which has changed parents' and children's lives around the globe, comes this remarkable guide. Down to earth, witty, and so, so smart about the complexities of parenting, Raising a Secure Child is a revelation. It provides a clear roadmap for all parents who want to give their children the very best beginnings possible. You will wish your parents had read this book, and if your children are grown, you will want to start all over again."--Arietta Slade, PhD, Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine "This book is outstanding in every respect--beautifully written, scientifically sound, loaded with excellent examples, and full of deep wisdom. What these authors have learned and are able to teach us can make a huge contribution to the well-being of your children and family."--Phillip R. Shaver, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of California, Davis "A 'must read' for parents of young children. The authors translate decades of psychological research into accessible and meaningful advice. Reading this book is an opportunity to learn about yourself--because, it turns out, knowing your own strengths and vulnerabilities is a vital key to parenting.”--Charles H. Zeanah, Jr., MD, Mary Peters Sellars-Polchow Chair in Psychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Tulane University School of Medicine"Psychotherapists Hoffman, Cooper, and Powell…provide a clearly drawn map to the circle of security, their attachment theory-based program for attuning parents to child needs….This is a highly usable guide with the potential to enrich relationships of all kinds.” (starred review) (Publishers Weekly 2017-02-27)"A book like this can be a crucial tool for parents….Hoffman, Cooper, and Powell distill the wisdom of attachment theory into an accessible and practical approach called the Circle of Security….Through their kind and compassionate writing style, the authors model the tone they ask parents to take with their children….Raising a Secure Child is one of the most important contributions to the parenting literature in years. It is a much-needed correction to the confusion of ‘attachment parenting,’ and fills a gap by focusing on the elusive, ephemeral flow of emotions between children and adults who care for them. The guidance is offered with an understated grace and poetry, as the authors soothe the parents’ own attachment history to ease their relationship with their children.” (Greater Good 2017-02-03)"Instead of perfect parenting, the authors stress the need for present parenting. They believe being there for our children, mistakes and all, builds trust and frees our children to be who they really are in front of us." (Library Journal 2016-12-01)

Occasionally an exceptionally easy baby is born to parents with little emotional baggage and few life stressors, who live in an perpetual state of Om. This book is for the rest of us. Drawing from a stunningly deep well of compassion and wisdom, the authors translate decades of science and clinical experience into a user-friendly guide to understanding our children's needs and how our own history affects our ability to accurately perceive and appropriately respond to those needs. Vivid imagery, humor, and forthrightness compel us to let down our guard and take an honest look at our interactions with our children. This would be unbearable if it were not for the unshakable sense that judgment has no place in the hearts of the authors or in this paradigm. We are in good hands with these guys, and they will inspire us to be "bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind" for our children, just as they are for us.
This book very simply and precisely gives parents access to language about a child's emotional and attachment needs without blaming the parent or child. The clinicians responsible for this particular book have found a very clear way to describe the emotional and attachment needs their very core. The circle of security approach condenses over 60 years of attachment research while avoiding heavy jargon. Raising a Secure Child gives access to an internal language to fully begin building and repairing the fullness of relationships with your children. I do very sincerely recommend it.
The information in this book, which is based on decades of research, has changed how I think about relationships. It has made my life better, my marriage better and certainly is making my children's lives better. This isn't just some person's opinion on how to raise children - this approach has been proven through research in attachment and research in the neurosciences. This also isn't some American-centric approach - this approach has been used all over the world to make relationships healthy. On their website (circleofsecurityinternational.org), they have more information and lists of providers all over the world. There are classes, blogs, a FaceBook page, YouTube videos and more to support people as they learn this information. It's a really helpful resource.I wish every person, and certainly every parent, had access to this information. Parenting is hard but having this solid roadmap helps make sense of it and gives me many many more moments of enjoying my children, setting boundaries and feeling connected to them. Our children range from infant to 18 years old and it applies to all of them!
Awesome tool for parents! If you need a book to help give you a 'road map' to navigate the adventures of parenthood and how to best help your child manage big feelings and confusing actions, this is the book! It certainly helped me make 'sense' of what my children were trying to communicate to me through their actions. It has truly changed the way I interact with them on a daily basis and has improved our relationship almost immediately. Written in a clear, easy to understand way, with lots of positive affirmations for parents, you'll end feeling like you can do it and that you are enough; not beaten down and depressed that you've messed everything up like some parenting books leave you feeling. Raising A Secure Child is a great book for new parents and seasoned parents alike! It will surely become a tried and true parenting classic!!
As a Registered COS-P Instructor, the most common question I receive is "do they have a book?" I'm SO excited to be able to now say "Yes!" This gentle and yet sometimes challenging approach is a valuable addition to the parent/child relationship...in fact to any emotionally close relationship.
As a therapist who works frequently with hurting children, I recommend this book to almost every parent to read and explore. Creating a trusted relationship where a child can feel safe enough to explore and yet also return to have their needs met is so very vital to the foundation of every child and family. I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds it as a potential source of understanding for secure parenting.
I took a Circle of Security class through Utah Foster Care to help me make connections to my foster child as well as my biological child. What an amazing transformation! I was so excited when I found that their book would be published soon. I bought it as soon as it came out and recommend it to all of my friends! This method changed the way I parent!
Best and most fundamental approach to parenting I have ever seen and I have taught parenting for 30 years. Parents actually see short term and long term improvments .... and in those tough times so does child protective services. I is all about unlocking the potencial we all have to CONNECT WITH OUR CHILDREN. Much better then a star chart.
